  Mission Statement
The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy works as a catalyst for the conservation of wildlife and its habitat.
It does this through the protection and management of species, the initiation and support of community conservation and development programmes, and the education of neighbouring areas in the value of wildlife.

Conserving a rhino for one year

$8,000

We have to protect 90 black and white rhino – the blacks comprise over 14% of Kenya's remaining population.  The cost of this is $638,359 per year or $12,049 per animal.

  1.

Conserve a Grevy’s for one year

$594

420 animals to be protected at a cost of $249,552.  Our population is a critical breeding herd and vital to the survival of the species (there are now fewer Grevy's in the world than black rhino).  Funding desperately needed.

  1.

Replace Canter Truck

$43,000

This is the workhouse of our vehicle fleet and essential for moving stores from Nairobi.  We were unable to to replace it in 2006 and need the funding now.

  1.

Elephant Exclusion Zone @ US$ 1 per running meter

US$ 10,000.

As you can see on Lewa, there is huge damage to tree vegetation by the large and increasing numbers of elephant. In an effort to try and halt this trend, we have established “Elephant exclusion zones” with a two strand electric wire connected to trees, not fence posts, that is environmentally friendly, and not an eye sore to visitors. As a result there are zones or islands on Lewa where the vegetation is regenerating and providing more browse for black rhino, who can pass underneath the wires that are five feet off the ground. We have a plan to put in place more zones, however this comes at a price.

  1.

  1.

Nairobi liaison office

$15,000

  1.

Orphaned Animal Funding

Any assistance with this is highly appreciated.

At present on Lewa we have two black rhino that are being hand reared. We also support the hand rearing of another juvenile white rhino that was moved to Ol Pejeta Conservancy recently along with Toki the cheetah who is also at Ol Pejeta. There is a huge amount of time, effort and man power that goes into looking after these animals, from milk, food, animal handler salaries, uniforms, radio’s, binoculars and transport. Any assistance with this is highly appreciated.

  1.

Water Systems

$18,000

Lewa supports a number of irrigation projects run by neighbouring farmers in an attempt to help them be more independent and have a better opportunity to make money.  The projects also have the added benefit of improving health by separating cattle and human use of the supply.  $18,000 would go a long way to developing a water project.
