  Rain and Rhino celebrations!
Article by Sara Spendrup

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is celebrating. The short rains started last weekend and yesterday the rangers found two new baby white rhino.

Three special gifts in one week!

Already we have had 5" (12.5 cm) at Headquarters and 7" (17.5 cm) at Matunda Gate, which is significantly more than we had last October when only 9mm or practically nothing fell.

The rain has started to turn Lewa which, only a week ago was straw coloured and very dry, a pale shade of green. The rivers are flowing again and the waterholes filling. Animals who had been so desperate for water have been congregating by the swamp, now the hills are alive again with zebra, giraffe, impala, elephant and rhino - in fact everything that calls Lewa home.

In spite of the torrential rain the rangers have been out every day checking on the animals ensuring they are safe and in good health. The two new babies bring the total to 36 white rhino. Their mothers are Songare and Natal, clearly we haven't christened the babies yet, but if you would like to please let us know.
