The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy works as a catalyst for the conservation of wildlife and its habitat.
It does this through the protection and management of species, the initiation and support of community conservation and development programmes, and the education of neighbouring areas in the value of wildlife.

Tracker Dogs

Lewa's patrol dogs.Lewa has a highly skilled tracker dog team of three men and two dogs that regularly assist KWS and Lewa security personnel with poaching investigations. The dogs serve as a deterrent to poachers and bandits.

Tash and Toffee are two Blood Hounds, kindly trained and given to Lewa by Ol Jogi Ranch Ltd. They were born in November 2004 and following seven months training at Ol Jogi, they were permanently based at Lewa from June 2005.

Further training and live follow-up situations have achieved some notable results so far. The Lewa tracker dog handlers have also received extensive training from the Mugie Ranch dog unit, who have had much experience with Blood Hounds. This training has undoubtedly contributed to the success’s that the Lewa dog team have enjoyed to date.

Every day, when not on an active operation, the dogs are kept busy on practice follow-ups and exercises in many different scenarios and situations.

Tracker dog deployments are often at the request of The Kenya Police, Anti-Stock Theft Unit and Kenya Wildlife Service and when on active operations they work in conjunction with the Lewa Kenya Police Reservist teams.

Sam and Punch, Lewa’s previous ex-British Army tracker dogs, have now been retired following the arrival of the Blood Hounds, Tash and Toffee. Sam is living in Nairobi and Punch is still here on Lewa, but not actively tracking.
