Lewa’s impact on wildlife has been profound. Over the last 30 years, Lewa has played a central role in the recovery of Kenya’s black rhino population, helping raise the numbers from fewer than 300 individuals in the 1980s to more than 1,000 today. Together with neighbouring Borana Conservancy, Lewa now protects over 14% of Kenya’s black rhinos. It also hosts the world’s largest single population of Grévy’s zebra and over 500 bird species.
