The Challenge

With inaccessibility to technology and/or lack of soft digital skills amongst the youth, populations are hard-pressed to meet the emerging challenges of the 21st century. Lewa’s digital literacy programme is specifically designed and geared towards building the technological and digital capacity of students and teachers within Lewa-supported schools.

The Digital Literacy Programme harnesses individual learning potential and allows young people to flourish in enhanced schooling environments. It enables a more tailored approach to education, which in turn, increases learners’ overall performance.  This is an integral platform in increasing the viability, employability and knowledge access for the marginalised communities in and around Lewa.

The Opportunity

Lewa Digital Literacy is a technology capacity-building programme with the mandate of improving learning outcomes while promoting conservation in Northern Kenya. The programme takes a holistic approach, concentrating on the integration of technology into the standard Kenyan curriculum, augmenting instructor knowledge and skill level, and providing a solid foundation for enhanced classroom learning.

The Impact

We’ve made significant progress in boosting digital literacy and integrating ICT into the curriculum across 27 supported schools. This directly supports Lewa’s goal of creating a thriving learning environment. Since the programme began, we’ve distributed 72 interactive smart boards and 174 computers, among other educational technology devices. This empowers students to explore new information and deepen their academic engagement.

Coupled with the mobile library, ICT integration has dramatically improved students’ literacy, comprehension, retention, and overall performance. Digitised evaluations have also made grading more efficient for teachers, and students are reportedly showing a more positive attitude towards learning.
