This World Lion Day, we are honouring the life and legacy of a legendary lioness named Sarah, who graced the Lewa wilderness for 15 years. In the wild, where every day is a struggle for survival, reaching such a senior age is a testament to her strength and resilience. Despite the countless challenges she faced, Sarah not only survived but thrived, becoming an icon and a legend across the Eastern, Northern, and Western territories of Lewa.

As a mother to 12 cubs, Sarah leaves behind a powerful legacy that will endure through her offspring and the countless memories she created for those privileged enough to witness her majesty in the wild.

Felix Kasyoki, predator monitor at Lewa, shared these words after years of working closely with her: “Her passing marks the end of an illustrous era. Sarah managed to raise the largest pride ever seen in this landscape, with twelve cubs from different litters. Each time I saw her, I felt a sense of accomplishment in my daily work. Her death was devastating to me. I loved Sarah very much, and she will always remain in my memories.”

While her passing this year marked the end of an era, her spirit will forever remain a source of inspiration and admiration, ensuring that she is fondly remembered for generations to come.
