In a 2023 report, the United Nations reported that by 2022 approximately 735 million people, or 9.2% of the world’s population were experiencing chronic hunger and that 2.4 billion people experienced moderate to severe food insecurity. This growing humanitarian crisis is driven by factors such as conflict, climate shocks, the rising cost of living and declining food production.

The UN recommends that to address this crisis and achieve zero hunger by 2030, we need urgent, coordinated efforts and policy interventions. This involves addressing entrenched inequalities, reforming food systems, investing in sustainable agriculture, and mitigating the impacts of conflict and the pandemic on global nutrition and food security.

Investing in sustainable agriculture to address zero hunger by 2030

Lewa’s Commitment to a Hunger-Free World

At Lewa, we are dedicated to a future where every individual has access to nourishing food and contributing to the United Nations’ goal of Zero Hunger by 2030.

Through our sustainable agriculture programe, we empower farmers to enhance food security and build resilience against the challenges of climate change. A key component of this initiative is soil testing, which we carried out in 2023 in partnership with Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) and the Alliance.

Soil testing was carried out for 500 farmers, with 33 receiving support in the form of farm inputs. Soil testing is crucial as it provides insights into the nutrient composition and pH of the soil, enabling farmers to make informed decisions about crop selection and the specific fertilizers and amendments needed. By understanding their soil’s needs, farmers can increase crop yields and quality, reduce unnecessary input use, and ultimately lower productivity costs.

In addition to supporting Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger), our community initiatives also align with other Sustainable Development Goals, including Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), Climate Action (SDG 13), and Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG 9).
