The Challenge

Northern Kenya is a dry landscape, with both people and wildlife depending on limited water resources.

In the communities surrounding Lewa, access to clean and safe water remains a challenge. Consequently, most residents in these communities have to depend on water supply from rivers and streams, which has a direct negative impact on the fragile ecosystem.

Our Response

Lewa works to improve access to clean and safe water for more than 50,000 households in the communities surrounding Lewa through our 18 community water supply projects.

Lewa has implemented the recommendations from our recent hydrology report, which shed light on how much water is available in the region, and constructed a water distribution system from the Subuiga Dam (built in 2024). In close collaboration with the Ngare Nything Water Resources Users’ Association (WRUA), Lewa continues to make significant progress towards securing sustainable water access for over 15,000 people after the full implementation of the project phases.

In implementing water projects, Lewa works with partners, WRUAs, and the communities themselves, to identify solutions to water shortages. Building the capacity of WRUAs enables them to effectively manage water resources within their designated areas, reducing reliance on surface water abstraction.
