For years, Lewa has partnered with the Women’s Microfinance Initiative (WMI), a non-profit organisation founded by a network of professional women in the Washington, D.C. area.

WMI’s generous support provides crucial microloans, while Lewa facilitates on-the-ground training, peer support, and networking opportunities. This collaboration leverages WMI’s financial expertise and Lewa’s deep understanding of the local community, creating a powerful synergy. A success story from this partnership is the Neema Women’s Group from Ntirimiti, a village near Lewa.

The Neema Women’s Group

What began as a small support network for widows selling detergent to fund school fees has flourished into a driving force for economic change in Ntirimiti. Empowered by the Women’s Microenterprise Programme, these women have expanded their efforts through farming, table banking, and agriculture, creating sustainable livelihoods.

The impact of Neema Women extends far beyond finances. They have shattered the stigma surrounding widows, empowered their community, and supported their children’s education. Their unity has enabled them to take on local leadership roles, reduce family conflicts, and create job opportunities for youth, actively combating unemployment and poverty.
