The United Nations ‘Convention on the Rights of the Child’ recognises education as a fundamental legal right for every child, a principle also echoed in the constitution of Kenya. However, despite these provisions, education continues to be inaccessible for many, particularly in rural Kenya.
The Lewa Education Programme provides crucial support to 27 schools surrounding Lewa, enhancing the quality of education for more than 9,100 students annually. This is achieved through infrastructure development, digital literacy, scholarships, training and capacity building of educators, and a conservation education programme.
Education provides the best platform for Lewa to extend the benefits of conservation to neighbouring communities. Attaining an education also helps expand students’ access to economic opportunities beyond those that depend on finite natural resources.
