It flows through us, connects us, and sustains us—Happy World Water Day! This global event serves as a reminder of the critical role that water plays in our lives and the urgent need to protect this precious resource.

Why World Water Day Matters

Established by the United Nations in 1993, World Water Day is celebrated every year on March 22. The event aims to highlight the importance of freshwater, which accounts for only 3% of the Earth’s total water supply. With increasing climate change impacts and growing demand, protecting and managing freshwater sources has never been more important.

The theme for World Water Day 2025 is ‘Glacier Preservation’, emphasising the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, slow glacial retreat, and manage meltwater more sustainably. Glaciers are vital freshwater reserves, providing drinking water, irrigation, and hydropower for millions worldwide. However, rising global temperatures are accelerating their melting, threatening water availability for future generations.

Lewa’s Commitment to Clean Water

In observance of World Water Day, Lewa reaffirms its dedication to clean water access, serving over 54,000 individuals through 18 community water supply projects, recognising water as a fundamental human right.

They say no one is an island, and when it comes to securing sustainable water access, this statement rings 100% true. Strong partnerships with key stakeholders have been fundamental to ensuring program ownership and long-term success.

By working closely with Water Resource Users Associations (WRUAs), Community Forest Associations (CFAs), water project members, and local administrative bodies, we’ve witnessed remarkable success in community-led initiatives. These partnerships have empowered local groups to take ownership of water projects, strengthening environmental conservation and promoting responsible water use.
